When doctors reach a certain point in their career in the NHS, the natural next step for many is to set up a private medical practice and start seeing patients privately. And why is this? Well mostly it’s because consultants care about looking after patients. Some also do it for the kudos it brings and some do it to earn additional income. And there is no shame in admitting this.
However, what starts off as just a few patients can progress quickly and before long your medical practice naturally develops into a full blown business.
However, let’s be honest…..you are clinically trained not business trained. You don’t have an MBA and don’t really know how to run a business. But your private medical practice does need to be run as a business for it to be successful and grow.
There are a number of key areas to focus on when running a business and these include:
Sales
Marketing
Finances
HR/Personnel
Governance
All of these areas are important and need to be properly looked after.
Without sales you won’t have any patients. Without marketing no one will know you exist. Without financial acumen you won’t be profitable. Without governance and HR policies and processes, you may not have any staff and could be leaving yourself open to a claim.
Sound daunting? There is no shame in asking for help. In fact your private medical practice will be far more successful if you enlist the help of experts in their field.
Our Top Tip is….don’t try to do it all yourself!
